FAQ Departmental student representative committee

Where can I find you?

The student council room is located in room A4-131, you can just drop by. Someone is often there. In any case, you can always meet us when we have a student council meeting. You can find the dates on the homepage (https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/fakultaeten/mathematik/fakultaet/fswima/#). You can also send an e-mail to fswima ( at ) uni-bielefeld.de at any time.

What do you do?

As the departmental student representative committee for Mathematical Economics, we primarily represent the interests of WiMa students. We sit on various committees (such as the faculty conference, the student advisory board or the meeting of all departmental student representative committees), in which we advocate for your wishes and demands and try to improve your studies. We also help with the organisation and implementation of various events such as Freshers' Days, the summer party or company presentations. A central component of the departmental student representative committee's work is the weekly departmental student representative committee meeting, where we come together to discuss current topics.

Can I join you?

All students are welcome to join us - whether they are in their first Bachelor's semester or their final Master's semester. Just talk to us or come along to a student council meeting and have a look!

FAQ Bachelor Mathematical Economics (enrolment until SoSe 25)

Which lectures should I take in the first semester?

In the first semester, you must take the courses "Analysis 1" and "Lineare Algebra 1". If you start in the winter semester, you must also take "Finanzbuchhaltung" and "Interne Unternehmensrechnung". However, if you start in the summer semester, the course "Mikroökonomik" is planned instead.

We also recommend that you attend the "Vorkurs Mathematik", which takes place before the actual semester. Alternatively or in addition, we recommend the course "Methoden der Mathematik", which starts in the first week of the semester.

Which lectures are to be taken in the following semesters?

The study plan is a recommendation of what you should take in which semester. You can find it here.

We recommend taking the course "Orientierende Praxisstudien" (OP) in the 5th or 6th semester, i.e. at the end of your Bachelor's degree programme. However, OP is only offered in the winter semester. In contrast, we recommend the programming internship in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th semester. A LaTeX course could also be very useful for your studies - especially when it comes to writing your Bachelor's/Master's thesis. You can usually have this course credited to your individual supplement.

You start in the Summer semester?

Both the WiMa Bachelor's and the WiMa Master's programmes are actually designed to be started in the winter semester. Of course, it is also possible to start in the summer semester. However, there may be delays in courses and if you would like to attend certain courses - such as the Bachelor's seminar on your favourite topic - your studies may be extended as a result. If you have any concerns or questions, you are welcome to contact our student counselling service or the academic advisor. They can then work with you to draw up a plan for a degree programme starting in the summer semester.

What do the profiles in the Bachelor mean?

The profile determines whether you have to attend the business studies or economics foundation courses. The profile also determines whether the grades from the business administration or economics foundation courses are included in the overall grade.

For example, if you have opted for the economics profile, you must attend Economics I and Economics II and the grades from both modules will be included in your overall grade. You must then also attend two of the three modules “Introduction to Accounting”, “Business Administration II” and “Data Analysis”. However, the grades from these modules are not included in the overall grade.

If you have listened to Economics I, Economics II, “Introduction to Accounting” and “Business Administration II”, you can only decide on your profile when you apply for your certificate on the basis of the grades you receive.

What does "two different subfields of mathematics" mean in the elective area of mathematics?

Two different sub-areas means that the two modules to be studied must differ in name. In the compulsory elective area, a 5 LP module and a 10 LP module must be studied. For example, if you would like to study "Algebra" as a 10 LP module, you cannot also take "Algebra" as a 5 LP module. You can, for example, take "Geometry and Topology" as a 5 LP module, although this module is related to "Algebra" in terms of content.

What can I do in the individual supplement?

The individual supplement comprises 10 credit points. You can include everything that is offered at Bielefeld University in the individual supplement - including courses from other degree programmes. However, these must be courses for the (respective) Bachelor's programme.

If you have already attended "Vorkurs Mathematik" or "Methoden der Mathematik", you can have both credited with 5 credit points each in the individual supplement. Otherwise, the course "Probability Theory 1" or an English language course may be useful for you as preparation for a Master's degree. Or a LaTeX course may also be very useful for you, as mathematical theses are usually written in LaTeX.

Where can I find information for the degree programme?

You can find all the information here.

If you have any further questions, you are welcome to contact us by email or come to our consultation hours!

When and how do I register for the Bachelor's thesis?

You can write your Bachelor's thesis in either Economics or Mathematics.

If you decide to write your Bachelor's thesis in the field of economics, you usually have to register for 3 Bachelor's colloquia and will be allocated one of them. The allocation usually takes place a few weeks after registration. You have to register in the middle of the lecture period. You will then write and submit your Bachelor's thesis in the following semester. You will automatically receive more detailed information on registration and the process by email every semester! So make sure you see this email in good time!

If you would like to write a Bachelor's thesis in the field of mathematics, you usually have to register for a Bachelor's colloquium in the electronic course catalogue (eKVV). You can also find all further information there.

You want to do a Master's degree in WiMa after your Bachelor's degree?

If you would like to do your Master's in Mathematical Economics with a profile in Financial Mathematics here at Bielefeld University, we recommend that you attend the course "Probability Theory I". This is best done towards the end of your Bachelor's degree. In the Financial Mathematics profile, you usually start with the lecture "Probability Theory II".
